Student Prince on Fort by Dina Alissa Dygon, Food For Thought Blogger.

It is the start of a new work week, and food cravings are always the topic...what is on the menu for lunch or dinner? What shall satisfy my hunger this time? Well, I have an hour so should I go for something quick at a drive-thru, or a homemade sit-down meal. With an abundance of good eateries, let us spin the wheel of cuisine and surprise my relentless palette. I do not discriminate against food, as I tend to never have a favorite - why? I do not limit myself to one dish when there is a flavor explosion that I have yet to discover. Anyone can eat pizza, burgers, and subs every day, but I opt for the upgrade, the actual whole dining experience...

Today I chose The Student Prince Café & The Fort in Springfield on 8 Fort Street. While parking is usually not so easy to find in the quaint little downtown district, I lucked out with a front door space. The building design was unique, I noticed the Marquee above the front entrance as if to think this was once a theatre at one time. This establishment was opened in 1935. German food is something I do not often think of on a daily, so it is my first visit here, let us see what I am in store for.

As I walked in, it was a division of sections. A bar to the right of me, with a closed off dining area to the far right. I am greeted by the host Manager Mike, as he asked me about preferential seating, I peered over to the left to view an open dining area & chose that section versus the few small tables in front of me. To my surprise, it was a very warm & inviting set up with family sized tables in the center, leather booth seating with wood framed encasing aligned along the wood paneled walls, so I opted for a booth. It was quiet & not crowded as I usually prefer to have some downtime without feeling rushed.

The décor was from an era that time forgot, to remind us of a culture that brings you to a period where time has not changed it. The red & white pattern wallpaper that borders the low ceiling while various blue colored German theme China plates are displayed along the walls with striking elk horns as if hunting is an artform. Many photos which included building drawings from the late 1800's to the early 1900's is used as reference to this historical site. Another section in the back dining area included a curio cabinet filled with crystal stemware pieces to stand for the many occasions celebrated throughout the years. And the banquet facility was nestled away in the back for privacy.

I was greeted by a friendly & personable server named Stephanie J. who has been here for over a decade. She was extremely knowledgeable about the history of this family themed establishment. During Christmas, they have musical entertainment, carolers who go table to table to share the holiday joy. Now onto the menu here, simple traditional schnitzel is what most would come for, but entrées are available as well as appetizers, sandwiches, soups & salads for a quick eat & dash, but for dinner, there is quite an extensive variety, and you should ask about the daily specials that are the chef's creations not on the regular menu.

The children's menu includes cute drinks named Dr. Suess Juice & Shirley Temple. There is a 3-course lunch special at $23.99, which includes your choice of 3 entrée items (excludes appetizers) a soup or salad, and a dessert, which really is a lot to consume on a lunch break. The overall price for just the salad and entrée already comes to that price, so it makes sense that you get more food for your money by going for the special priced course. It also encourages you to try something new that most people do not really get a chance to...thank you Stephanie for pointing that out...she really wants you to stuff your face and save money doing it...lol.

My upgrade was the dinner 3-course for $32.99, entrées included a Haus bratwurst, red vinegar cabbage, potato home fries, Hungarian beef stewed goulash, and a bone in pork chop with caramel glaze. I had a garden salad and opted for the Roquefort (French aged cheese) with French dressing, which was tableside prepared to accommodate the first course. It's a take on a blue cheese kind of taste. I included a cup of cream of zucchini soup, that was a nice warm start up on a cold rainy day to address my chill.

You are made to feel like family with every visit as a reminder that your business here is valued. The food quality is exceptional, and you can taste the homemade recipe in each bite, and with this overall experience, this is why you give such restaurants your repeat business. I miss home cooking, and this reminded me of my past time at family gatherings, which only happens during the holidays.

Most people I am sure can try this massive amount on their plate, for me, a doggie bag was needed. And, for the finale, my dessert. Everything they made was in house with the one exception, the house special dessert was a chocolate crumb cake that was sourced via Koffee Kup Bakery in Chicopee...shhh, the server had to tell me that in secret only because they try to keep business opportunities within the community. My pick was the Crème Souchard, a crème de cacao liquored filled chocolate whipped mouse with homemade whipped crème topped with a touch of chocolate sprinkles...heavenly, just divine. This crème de la creme ended my meal with a twist to satisfy both my curiosity and my sensational tastebud.

I can have two-hour lunches, but most can really have 45 minutes plus the 10-15 minutes' drive & parking time. This was a wonderful choice for lunch as food is served at once. I can only image what's on the menu next time for my dinner time slot...cannot wait.

Crepes Tea house in West Springfield

By John Shea

I've been there before, but never alone. Mostly with friends, a group of five or more, always had space for us. I've even gone on a first date there, a last date too. The place, I wouldn't call small or too big, it seems like a right sized restaurant. Some low to the ground padded booths in the front for a more intimate setting. They seated me on the other side, a two-person table, there were a few couples there as well, and a crew of six twenty somethings dressed for a special occasion. The couple in front of me looked like they were on a date, she laughed and played with her hair and the back on his head looked like the back of a head, His posture was less than confident. The two-person table to the left of me was empty, I've sat there before, I wasn't sitting there today though, and neither was she. I looked through the menu.

They have the type of menu that's unforgettable. It has pictures, Its formatted well, is in a three ring binder and curtails style and just enough class to be accessible for anyone. On my drive there, the silly thought crossed my mind for a moment that she might be there, silly thoughts are commonplace here, The light fixtures are little tea pots and steaming cups of something hollow out the backs of the chairs. I flipped though the tea section, its massive, takes up like 20 pages easily, Many styles of tea and many flavors for each. I went with the Silver needle, Harvested only a few days each spring, Silver needle is the highest grade of white tea and one of the rarest teas in the world. It's clear, delicate, Nectar-like infusion has an evanescent sweetness and a mellow, lingering finish. At least that's what the menu says, a cup was $10.95. It tasted just the way they described it, I would drink this tea every day if I could afford it, or one of their teas, there are so many options, If you're a fan of tasty caffeinated beverages this place is gold. The have Decaf teas as well, these don't interest me personally, but they have them. I flipped through straight to the desserts.

A good friend told me about their walnut chocolate cake many times, I went to order it once before, but they were out of stock then. But today, today they have a piece, I ordered it first. I also ordered the Nalesniki, Fried crepes with ricotta and fruits of your choice, I went with blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and of course strawberry. A light vanilla cream, chocolate drizzle and a sprinkle of powdered sugar topped it. It came in four pieces, rolled up with the strawberries on top and the other berries inside of each, at first I thought they screwed me on the berries, Never judge a Nalesniki by its cover. The Chocolate walnut cake was shaped like the bottom half of an ostrich egg, The inside was moist and dense, and a high quality chocolate flavor. It was encrusted with chopped walnuts, a drizzling of chocolate and finally a powdering of powdered sugar. I love powdered sugar. I see now why my friend orders a piece each time he comes here, I'm stealing his idea.

From my own experiences here, I know for a fact. The crepes are bangin. They're larger than you'd expect and always filled with the freshest ingredients. They have a large variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes. From salmon to mussels, stroganoff to steak strips, Potato cakes to cream puffs! There are the safe choices and the choices with names from a language I don't recognize. Vareniki and Pelmeni dumplings to Grenki and Khachapuri, they all sound delicious from their respective descriptions, Thankfully the menu has plenty of pictures too. There is also a ton of different coffees to choose from, Next time I plan on trying their Matcha and golden turmeric latte. My pinky starts to rise as I type that last one but I hold it down. I got just the right amount of check ins from my waitress too, She seemed like she was angry at something, it reminded me of her. Or it may have just been her eastern European accent which I liked a little too much. I plan on coming back here for certain, you wouldn't expect it for where its located. It's just a piece of the areas culture jumping out at you. High quality food, High quality tea at an appropriate cost. Just another sliver of what the area has to offer, I'm going to check out the supermarket down the street soon.

Frigo's on Williams

By John Shea

It's almost noon! How can this guy be so late? My 10:00 am appointment has been a no show and I'm starving. Normally I would have brought my own lunch but that's a whole other story, don't even get me started. My tummy is rumbling and I'm not getting fast food, I'm just not. There were a few places that came to mind, but I specifically wanted a sandwich, a good one. A sandwich that filled my belly without emptying my wallet. I've been to Frigo's once or twice before, it's right on Williams Street.
So I made my way there, straight through the south end of Springfield. Less than ten minutes from work, I could be back before anyone knew I left before lunch started. (don't tell my boss). The line was short! I beat the lunch time rush. There were only two people ahead of me and one of them finished too quick for his own good, he didn't even get a cannoli to go! Fool. I ordered the sully, its corned beef, provolone cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing, it's my go to at a mere $8.99. all of
their sandwiches are on the cheap side of the sandwich market, plus the mass of the thing is twice of a scrubway. I knew from the minute I walked in, I would also leave with a cannoli as well, it just makes sense. Some cucumber salad also caught my eye so I took a half pound of that. Ready to walk out of this deli are not only solid sandwiches, but lasagna, chicken tenders, ziti with sauce, too many choices to list
and enough to keep me coming back to try more.
I almost missed the free cheese sample tray behind me, keyword "almost". The cheese is good, imported from Italy, same as some of their wines. And if you like Salame, they've got the good stuff. They have their own brand of pastas and sauces, a few isles with a selection of different cooking essentials, from oils to artichoke hearts. I personally like to cook for myself, and this place gives me a bunch of stuff to play around with in the kitchen at home. I want to get a tub of their homemade sauce staring at me from the cooler.
With my cannoli, sandwich and salad in hand. I had to turn down the chocolate covered Oreos and homemade cookies screaming at my failing self-restraint. With a deep breath I collected myself and checked out. The store itself gives a genuine Italian deli vibe you just don't see often, going through the store feels like a process, like they know what you want and you're going to get it and you'll be satisfied kind of process. I would highly suggest anyone with a rumbling tummy and a ten spot to come through. The sandwiches hit. The Cannolis hit. Tons of options if you don't feel like cooking and want to bring something tasty home, and they also have the ingredients too, if you want to whip up something with a little zing.
Frigo's foods have been in the heart of Springfield since the 1950's. The specialty shop has been a staple of the community and is an important part of our culture here. The south end of Springfield is a host to many different peoples from many different places, and one thing we can all agree upon. A good sandwich can seal a long day, give Frigo's a shot if you're in the area, even if you're not, it's worth the drive. And if you're worried about the natives, just act like you own the place.
